I think the title of your blog entry answers your own question… why the fear mongering? Fear = exciting news. And exciting news = more people using your site/paper. Hands down, fear is the #1 hype the media uses to raise ratings. Truth hardly ever has anything to do with ratings unfortunately. Is anyone surprised? Every time a new technology evolves to help people, there are people right behind it waiting to exploit it and take advantage of it. Nothing new or unusual here. Remember Y2K? Anything for a story….

My two cents is the article had a third objective. Take advantage of the blogosphere by engaging Bloggers. The end result … your post. This turns into more PR for the author and traffic to the newspaper. Mission accomplished.
