Great post. I agree that without an exceptional quality of work, flying solo as a consultant cannot be sustained, due to the reliance on word of mouth and referral marketing. A consultant needs to always focus on delivering exceptional value – and the rest should follow.

8 months ago I did the unthinkable. I left the safety of group medical (urology) practice to “go solo.” It has been the most challenging and rewarding endeavor of my life. I enjoyed your blog and I am amazed at how similar our obstacles are. Good luck and keep posting!

Interesting reading Stowe and I have to say since seeing your presentation at the Social Networking Tools conference in London last week I’ve been fascinated by incorporating blogging into my soloist career – and to those of my clients open to new ideas and technologies.

I agree with you and many of the posters that a great reputation is paramount, along with delivering a great product. If you fall short on delivery then none of the rest will matter.
