Download IE7 … LATER

by Daniel Tsang - October 19/2006

Yesterday, Microsoft released its ‘final’ version of IE7.  New features include tabbed browsing, a new look, and some updates to certain web standards.  There are some nice usability tweaks as well.  Feel excited and ready to download the newest version?  Maybe you should consider holding out for a while.

IE7 has been plagued with a number of bugs during its BETA stages, and we received a few reports with irregularities when using previous version of IE7 in FreshBooks and in other web applications.  Hopefully with their final release, Microsoft has finally ironed out all the bugs.

Why hold out now?

Well for one reason, it’s new.  I’m betting that in a short period of time, Microsoft will be releasing a patch for some serious security issue in its new ‘final’ release.  One reason is that there are too few people using IE7 to really find and report all the existing security issues and bugs.  This also means that there are less people who are actively finding security holes for un-lawful purposes … for now.

If you check out the latest browser stats for the month of September.  Only 2.5% of the web community are on IE7. However, 2.5% was a 0.5% increased from previous month and that’s huge!  Our web stats indicate that 3.92% of users are using IE7 this month which is up from 3.79% for last month. While FreshBooks works great on all the popular browsers, we look forward to begin testing on the new official release so we can add it to our list of supported browsers.

I definitely tip-my-hat to Microsoft for recognizing their product flaws and for actively trying to address them, but my consumer confidence in their products is really at a low point.  I’m not saying that MS products don’t work.  I’m just saying whenever they release another serious security patch for any Microsoft product; I’m not surprised at all.

Hopefully when Microsoft’s new OS, Windows Vista, is finally released, it will bring confidence back to me and other users who feel the same.

I didn’t follow Daniel’s advice, I installed IE7 and found the following issues so far (which are not security related thank goodness):
1. Everything appeared blurry: apparently they changed my browser setting to use “cleartype” because it is good for flat screens, but since I’m on a CRT, everything was really fuzzy. I changed my advanced settings in Tools -> Internet options -> Multimedia and removed the “Always use cleartype” checkbox and everything looked back to normal.
2. Everytime I startup IE7, instead of going to my home page (www.google.ca) its trying to load up: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005, which I assume is some sort of configuration page for the first time users run IE7. Unfortunately, the page is not reachable, so it hangs everytime I start it. I haven’t found a solution to this issue yet.

Update:
As it turns out the page that wasn’t working (runonce) is now working and one of the settings that they recommend is the cleartype setting. If the page had worked in the first place I may never have had the fuzzy screen problem. Either way, I recommend not selecting clear type if you have a CRT (non-flat-screen) monitor.

Okay, I know I’m hogging the blog comments here, but I just had to say something positive about IE7.

One of the things that really annoyed me about IE6 was whenever I clicked a link from my email, it would open the link in a browser that was already open and I would often lose the page I had opened last. This was über annoying and aggravated me to no end (but not enough to go searching for a solution that was probably out there). Anyhow, with IE7, when you click a link, the link opens up in a new tab in the same IE7 window…YAAY!

I am soo not happy with IE7 right now. I’ve spent some time on the beta and have looked at some of the previous sites I’ve worked, and they look like hell.

Granted there are conditionals now that I can include in order to “fix” css styles for the many variations of IE but it just bloody sucks that though IE is now trying to catch up with standards and still blowing.

Or it could be that I’m soo tired, it’s 2am and I’m still hung up on how painful it is to style for IE.

Same issue with http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005 the only way to resolve this is to right hand click on my network connection and repair it!
Then the internet works again. It seems to be affecting the DNS server everytime it starts up. Blooming annoying!

Is there a fix for IE7 defaulting to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005, and hanging up?
I have to disable my Norton Firewall to get internet access…..not comfortable with this!
I don’t know if there’s a setting I can change to rectify this or what.

Hi Mike,

You might have to contact Norton who will probably be more familiar with their incompatibilities with IE7. Sorry, I can’t be of much more assistance on this. Good luck with this.

Yesterday I innocently loaded Explorer 7. My computer was down the entire day until my husband told me I could do a restore.

None of my software worked and when I tried to go on the Internet it didn’t go to my homepage but was constantly trying to load “go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=74005″

Heh… and this is a year later. Wow. Sorry to hear, but glad you got it fixed up.

All I can say is… Firefox, Firefox, Firefox. It may not be perfect, but it’s a heck of a lot better than Explorer; it also has the added advantage of not being integrated with the operating system, so a failed browser upgrade can’t put your computer out of commission.

Same issue homepage constantly trying to load “go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=74005″ can not access the internet. Will try to restore? Amazing a year later and this comes back to haunt us.

This mess cost me a computer update as we worked through the issue.
Try opening IE7, but not the updates, this works for me until I go completely to Mozilla!!!

Has anyone really fixed this problem yet? I had to format my pc to fix other problems, and 4 hours later I now have this. What the heck is going on and how do I fix it??? I love the navigation of IE7 (the tabs are genius) GRRRRR

Well, the tabs were stolen from, oh, every other major browser on the planet. :) They originated ten years ago with a browser called Netcaptor.

I was having the problem noted by Levi Cooperman above (Everytime I startup IE7, instead of going to my home page…its trying to load up: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005, ).

So I used IE7’s troubleshooter and found that I was able to connect to the internet, my email was fine, and also I was able to use Netscape to go my homepage and the internet. As a result, after reading the above messages and unsuccessfully fiddling around with my IE7 settings, I concluded the problem was probably in my FIREWALL (F-Secure Anti-Virus Client Security).

So I went into that, chose “Internet shield,” then “Advanced,” then “Application Control” (which lists the permissions for all applications) and saw that somehow, the permission for “explorer.exe” (IE7) was set at “DENY”. So I clicked “explorer.exe,” then “Details,” then I changed the permission for “explorer,” to “ALLOW” and clicked “OK.” Then EI7 worked. (At the outset, I may have also clicked on “Virus and Spy Protection,” then “Advanced,” and “Browser control” and unlocked my IE7 settings. But after finishing I relocked my IE7 settings.)

In short, the solution is to go into your Firewall and reset the permission on “explorer.exe” from “Deny” to “Allow.”

How do you copy the code in a file as directed above?

Hi Kjmeztisa,

You can use notepad or any other plain-text text editor to save the file. Keep in mind that editing your registry is a dangerous operation if you have not done it before. Please do so at your own risk.

Cheers,

Daniel

Thanks so much Karthikeyan!

I was out of ideas after trying every other IE default page fix out there, including my own idea of deleting all go.microsoft.com entries from the registry.

I cannot believe such a major company can get so many simple things wrong so often. Usually, it’s because they insist on taking control out of the hands of users.

Go Firefox. Go Linux.

I went through the process of updating my registry and still had the same problem…but when we got rid of TrendMicro PC-cillin and installed BitDefender the problem resolved itself.

We did switch to Firefox, but our CRM program didn’t work well with it.

Today I had the same problem: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=74005. I spent on this sht just one day!!!
I resolved it changing Profile change in Virus Baster-2008. Changed it from Home Network 2 to Home Network 1. My OS is Win XP Home Edition SP3. My PC was infected and I think it was changed by viruses. I think the problem is not in IE 7.0 at all. A little change causes big problems!!!

Hi,

I just installed a VGA card and updated the computer with Microsoft Update and got this problem.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005

I tried to enter the registry parts, however it didn’t work. When I click on the home button the browser will go to the home page I use (google).

So somehow it still wants to do the runonce on
a site which doesn’t excist…

Has anyone got another idea how to solve this problem?

Hi Bart,

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I’m not sure if it helps, but I did find this useful link on resolving link issue you were describing. You can find out more information at the following web address:

As always, please be careful when editing your registry and always make a backup before doing so.

Thanks Karthikeyan!

I just added the “RunOnceComplete”=dword:00000001 to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] using regedit to get rid of the annoying habit of not going directly to my homepage. It was frustrating!
