As unlikely as it seems from the outset, I think traditional media companies (TMC) will ultimately rule the web 2.0/New Media space. TMCs will surely become the next VCs.

Have a question regarding the web 2.0 biz model.

Haven't seen anything mentioned in the way of tax advantages. I would imagine there are locations in the world which would have significant advantages in this regard (while of course complying with tax law). Many corporations do not repatriate earning (or a percentage) to a minimize tax. Has anyone seen information on this regarding SaaS?

Jamie...I wish there was a black and white answer to that question...perhaps the easiest way to different between those buckets is in terms of dollars a "customer" will spend with you annually:

Lower: $1-1,000
Mid: $1,000-100,000
Upper: $100,000+

Honestly I feel a little ridiculous posting those groupings there because there is no cut and dry answer to your question...and there really are so many variables to consider (like industry, service/product offering, etc), but that's a stab at it....

Thanks for the post Mike - always a good read. However, one question which would help me understand things a little more - what criteria do you believe separates the "low", "middle", and "upper" segments that you alluded to?

Cheers...

Interesting observations, Mike.

As a somehwat girzzled entrepreneur, I would put it slightly more bluntly than you did: anyone who thinks he can build any kind of great service on a part-time basis is kidding himself.

Another personal observation: I don't believe that web 2.0 biz models have to be driven by Google ads. We've been able to grow a healthy business on the basis of a $240 annual subscription with www.chinesepod.com. (We teqch Mandarin Chinese.) We also plan to launch a Spanish language instruction next month. Subscription models can and will be done.

Thanks Aaron, and glad to see someone made it all the way to the bottom of that post :)

Re service: we really value people here at FB. If you do that, then it's gotta be all about service IMO.

Mike,

Once again, thank you for sharing your amazing insight. You have saved many of us hundreds and thousands of dollars and hours by learning from what all of you are doing there at FB.

We are in the process of building 1-2 online projects that will be released here in the next 6 months and I am excited about them, but also scared that they will be just another web application. I agree with you that our service sets us apart as we readily answer the phone or return calls promptly. Not too many other companies can say that any more.

Thanks again!
