On Service: Invest in a good headset
It was not too long ago when I was suddenly paralyzed with back pain as each minor neck movement resulted in significant back agony. Getting home was a challenge as checking blind spots when driving meant significant neck work.
The problem? A lack of a good headset.
Providing great custom support not only means hiring the right people, but buying the right equipment. Our older headset had broken down and I was often forced to hold the phone in between my head and shoulder to keep my hands free when speaking with clients. This resulted in my painful experience described above.
Investing in a good headset is your first step towards increased productivity and saving yourself a painful trip to your doctor. After much research, we purchased the Plantronics S12 system. It is a mid priced headset and station combo. I have been pain free and very happy since purchasing it.

Well…just so long as you’re not a exaggerator… :0

I have a headset I use connected to a cordless phone. I want a head set that is “cordless” to the phone. Do they make such a monster? I’m not talking about a cell phone, but something similar to it… something that connects to a regular phone, but allows me to be completely wireless and walk around my office without being tethered to a cordless phone clipped to my belt. Is this such headset? Hard to tell from the pictures.

Hi James,
You can take a look of at a few of these sets by Plantronics which offers a complete wireless solution. However, you might want to explore other alternatives besides Plantronics.

Hey, these are great links! Thanks a lot!

I am glad they helped. Also don’t worry about the prices listed on the Plantronics website, you can usually get them for less than half their retail price with the help of online price comparison tools like http://pricegrabber.com.

I’ve got the GN 9350 and use it for both Skype and normal phones. It is a really good model and very light. Sound quality is good.

BTW – I was there when Daniel’s neck got sore…it was because his old headset broke and just before we got a replacement – it’s amazing how little time it took for the pain to set in. For the record, my comment was in jest and I take ergonomics very seriously and do not want to undermine the discomfort that can arise when you work at a desk. Desk height, charis, headsets, keyboard trays and working hard on your posture are all really important considerations when you drive a desk. Don’t skimp on your reseach or your spending in getting your workstation set up.

I’m a huge fan of the extreme noise-cancelling Boom headset. It always keeps your conversations free of interruption caused by any background noise: http://www.theboom.com

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the suggestion. Noise-cancelling headsets are usually great for noisy environments with a lot of background noises.
Some things to consider when purchasing noise cancelling headsets:
- The increased cost
- Power consumption if you are using a battery powered head set
- Noise cancelling is only good for noisy background sounds. If your co-worker is yapping away beside you, it’s not going to help much.
Cheers,
Daniel T.
