Are there any FreshBooks-specific features that differentiate the payment gateways you work with? Or do they all work the same (through FreshBooks)?

  • Donald Cowper

    Hey Eric,

In general, the payment gateways all work pretty much the same way. However, there are a few things to consider, such as:

Is the gateway available in your area?
Some only work in US/Canada (such as Beanstream), whereas some others are aimed at a specific country (like eWay in Australia).

Do you want your gateway to be able to automatically bill your clients for recurring invoices?
Some gateways allow you to have recurring auto-bills within FreshBooks and some do not.

    The auto-bill capable gateways are:
    PayPal Payflow Pro
    Authorize.Net
    Beanstream
    BluePay
    Braintree
    eWAY
    First Data Global Gateway
    First Data Global Gateway e4
    iTransact
    Landmark
    PSiGate

    The Non Auto-Bill Gateways are:
    PayPal
    PayPal Website Payments Pro
    2Checkout
    Google Checkout

Do you want your clients to stay within your FreshBooks account when they pay through your gateway?
With most payment gateways, your clients never leave the FreshBooks invoice page. However, there are a few exceptions. PayPal, 2Checkout, and Google Checkout will actually take your client to their website to complete the transaction.

I hope this information helps. If you have any other questions, please contact customer support. Someone there would be more than happy to help.

Great post Donald. We read this and went on to investigate Braintree as a way to get more out of Freshbooks.
Unfortunately, the Braintree sign up process is ultra confusing for Canadian companies applying- at least startups where there isn’t someone being paid full time to figure out all the forms and application requirements. I would really caution Canadian Freshbooks users to look into one of the other options on the list.
All we want is Freshbooks auto-payment for our US customers. Can you comment on which of all the potential providers you’ve heard the best opinions about from your Canadian users?
    Thanks
