Nike. IDEO. Google Creative Lab. We’ve always admired the work of these talented design titans and we’re honoured to be named among them as a winner of an Interaction Design Association (IXDA) award for the FreshBooks iPhone app.
When we released the app last year, the enthusiastic response we received from you, our customers, confirmed that running FreshBooks on a mobile device went well beyond a “nice to have” feature. It was a crucial piece of allowing you to run your business efficiently, from anywhere.
Many of the decisions we made throughout our design and development process were informed by directly consulting with customers; letting them behind the curtain to give us feedback and bug reports.
I remember as if it were yesterday, climbing the stairs at a customer’s 30 story office building to do our first round of live in-person usability testing of our app. It was challenging and fun to see the early prototypes of our designs come to life in the hands of real users. When we left that usability testing session, we knew we had much more work to do before delivering the final version of the app, but we think it was worth the wait.
We documented our design process in an article published on Six Revisions, examining both the backstory of how we build the app and how our customers are at the centre of everything we design. This research-based approach to the app’s design translated into making fewer assumptions about the kinds of scenarios our customers would encounter. We also discovered ways that we could reduce other barriers in our existing platforms (such as improving the API integration) and invest in several ways to enable a better, more seamless and intuitive experience on mobile.
Being acknowledged by IXDA is particularly special for us as we are big believers in their mission to advance the discipline of Interaction Design and we’ve attended and presented at their events over the past few years. They are an organization powered solely by volunteers and have made enormous contributions to the strength of the global interaction design community. Its also incredibly cool that the award ceremony this year just so happens to be on our home turf here in Toronto :).
Thank you to everyone who helped us make the FreshBooks app as great as it is and to our customers who made this recognition possible. Stay tuned for plenty more awesomeness in 2013.
