Highlights from #IMakeaLiving Austin and Looking Ahead to Boston!

FreshBooks is on the road! In September, we hosted #imakealiving in Austin. Next up: Boston!

With great risk comes great reward—and for small business owners everywhere, this couldn’t ring truer! Plenty of heart, soul and labor goes into the creation and maintenance of a small business. And guess what? FreshBooks is here for you every step of that journey. Last month, we hosted our fourth #imakealiving event in Austin. Here’s how it all went down!

Highlights from #imakealiving Austin

The inspiring panel included Spike Jones (VP for the Strategy team at Spredfast), Jackie Huba (Author of four best-selling books, with three on customer loyalty), Chrystie Vachon (Austin based serial entrepreneur who’s sold 6 websites), Jeremy Tanner (Who works with growth stage start-ups, arming them with the same tools used by Uber, Airbnb, Spotify and Fitbit), and Chris Heuer (Creative Catalyst with AdHocnium, helping organizations optimize their ability to create value in a connected world). The event was moderated by Saul Colt, North America’s best word of mouth marketer.

Austin – we had a wonderful time visiting your city! Stubb’s Bar-B-Q could not have been a more gracious host for our event. This was indeed the place to be if you were in the market for helpful entrepreneurial advice.

Throughout the morning, we had a chance to hear from and connect with our speakers, who shared their valuable experiences as small business owners.

Our panelists had some incredible insights, sparking meaningful discussions throughout. Chrystie Vachon weighed in on the importance of being passionate about what you do.

She explained that although having passion for your work is key, it’s actually more important to focus on your deeper values. She emphasized that you must align how you make a living with where you want to go, and how you want to grow.

The role of patience as a small business owner cannot be underscored enough. Jackie Huba touched on this, explaining how difficult it can be at times to remain patient when you’re hoping for immediate results.

Her advice to entrepreneurs everywhere is to find a business coach who can help keep you motivated when you’re in a slump and need that extra lift.

We all learn tough lessons which we are now grateful for over the course of our lives—and this is all too true for the journey of a small business owner. Chris Heuer discussed a specific experience as a young copywriter, when handing over his first piece of writing to the editor.

He explained his initial dismay in receiving it afterwards, seeing more red pen corrections than words on the page. He emphasized, however, that sometimes what may crush you in the moment is in fact a valuable opportunity to improve down the road.

And, finally, we touched on the topic of imposter syndrome. Jeremy Tanner believes the solution to this is to simply feel grateful for everything you have. Instead of thinking “I shouldn’t be here,” it’s best to think, “I’m lucky to be here.” Replacing that defeatist attitude with a more humbling, appreciative one is crucial.

Looking Ahead to #imakealiving Boston

For the sixth city on the #imakealiving tour, we’re heading to Boston! Our event helps to facilitate and inspire connections between small business owners—and we’re honored to be a part of it all.
