There’s a trend afoot that you’re going to like if you’re a freelancer or small business owner—the rise of the flex worker. A long time ago, people had something called full-time permanent jobs… okay, some people still have them, but they’re an ever-shrinking group. By 2020, they’ll make up only 60% of the workforce, according to a recent study. In this expanding freelance economy, everyone else will have some form of flex job, working as a temp worker, or on a contract or project basis, or any combination of those.
One of my closest friends is a perfect example of the new flex worker. She’s midway through a six-month contract as a web designer at a music company, plus she works part-time at a clothing store and is redesigning a jeweller’s website as a moonlighting project. On top of that triple combo pack, she also spends a couple hours a week on a side business as a distributor of skin care products.
Her mother, who recently retired from a 35-year stint as a school administrator doesn’t get it. She thinks my friend needs to settle down and get a real job.
