What would you say if I told you that the key to your success in business was getting more sleep? Sounds crazy, but it may be true.
Yet many entrepreneurs run their business on less than 6 hours of sleep a night. This was exactly how my friend Katy was living years ago when she started her first business. At the time, she was nearing the end of her 1-year maternity leave and was desperate to stay home with her baby full-time. She was confident she could replace her former full-time salary if she executed the plan she had been developing for months.
Upon the launch of her new venture, she began working 10-12 hour days, all while looking after her child. She worked during nap times, from bed time until the wee hours of the morning, and all through the day while her son played and explored. But after several months of this, she felt completely burnt out, and had lost the passion for her work. After several failed attempts to improve her situation – including lessening her work hours and adding in more quality time with her son – she eventually gave up on her dream and went back to work full-time.
While many factors were involved in Katy’s decision to quit her business, I really think the lack of sleep she subjected herself to was to blame.
Weekend Well-Being Challenge: Don’t let what happened to Katy happen to you. This weekend, I challenge you to get at least 8 hours of sleep on Sunday night. Come Monday, you’ll be so productive you won’t ever go back to those sleepless nights again.
