PayPal Error Message - “We can’t process your payment right now, so please try again later.”
Your clients are trying to pay you and they encounter the error message: “We can’t process your payment right now, so please try again later” after entering all their credit card details in the PayPal interface. They also might be getting looped back to the beginning of the payment process over and over again.
The value of the transaction has pushed your client’s credit card over the “Guest Checkout” transaction limit -OR- your client’s credit card/email address is associated with an existing PayPal account.
Your client must sign into a PayPal account to pay the invoice - they can still use a credit card once they are logged in.
PayPal limits and solutions:
- When using PayPal Standard (customer does not have paypal account), a credit card has a total lifetime transaction limit of approximately $4000. This value is the total of all payments ever made through the PayPal Guest Checkout Experience on that credit card. Even if the total is below $4000, they can only use that card 15 times as a guest. If the card is flagged by PayPal, an account (username/password) will be required for security reasons. In either case, your client will need to sign up for a PayPal account in order to use that credit card.
- If your customer does have an existing PayPal account and the credit card or email address is recognized, your client MUST log in to PayPal first for security reasons.
As the FreshBooks account owner, you can add a variety of other payment gateways to your account that do not have these limits, including other PayPal offerings. As an added bonus all other gateways (excluding 2 Checkout) also allow your customers to pay within your FreshBooks interface. You can check out the full list of gateways here.
Important: Please note that any goods or services sold on an invoice using FreshBooks are not eligible for PayPal Seller Protection. To learn more about PayPal Seller Protection, please follow this link: https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/security/seller-protection-faq
