What does “Note: You can only pay with a PayPal account to complete this payment” mean?
If you are a PayPal Standard (Business or Premium) user and your Client receives this message when they are trying to pay you, you need to verify your PayPal account.
If you have recently added your bank account to your PayPal account, you will need to verify your bank account by confirming deposits from PayPal before your client can pay without a PayPal account. It may take 2-3 business days before the deposits are visible.
Verifying your PayPal account will link it to your bank account, which lets you:
- Collect payments from credit cards directly (no PayPal account needed)
- Transfer funds out of PayPal
If you have a verified account and your Client still sees this message:
- Log into your PayPal Account.
- Click on your profile Profile link.
- Click on Website Payment Preferences under your Selling Preferences column
- Under PayPal Account Optional, select On to accept optional payment.

With that enabled, your Clients will be able to pay you without logging into their PayPal account. This is known as the Guest Checkout experience. Note that the limits of this Guest Checkout experience is a lifetime total per credit card of $4000, or up to 15 separate transactions before PayPal will require that the card be associated to a PayPal account.
