Tax season is upon us, so here’s a quick reference list of all the important tax dates and deadlines for 2013 in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom:

Important U.S. Tax Dates for 2013

Listed below are some of the most important U.S. tax dates in 2013 for small businesses and sole proprietors:

January 15, 2013

  • Last estimated tax payment for 2012 due

January 31, 2013

  • Forms 1089, 1099, W-2G and W-2 must be issued to employees, if applicable

February 15, 2013

  • Forms 1099-B, 1099-S, and 1099-MISC must be issued, if applicable

February 28, 2013

  • Forms 1098, 1099 and W-2G must be filed for payments made in 2012

April 15, 2013

  • Tax returns are due!
  • Tax return extension forms due
  • Last 2012 IRA contribution due
  • 1st quarter estimated tax due for 2013

June 17, 2013

  • 2nd quarter estimated tax due for 2013

September 16, 2013

  • 3rd quarter estimated tax due for 2013

October 15, 2013

  • Extended tax returns due

January 15, 2014

  • 4th quarter estimated tax due for 2013

Important Canadian Tax Dates for 2013

Listed below are some of the most important Canada tax dates in 2013 for small businesses and sole proprietors:

February 11, 2013

  • NETFILE and TELEFILE open for the 2012 tax year

March 1, 2013

  • Last day to contribute to RRSP for 2012

March 15, 2013

  • 1st quarter tax installment due

April 30, 2013

  • Personal income tax returns due
  • Business tax payments due, though the returns aren’t due until June

June 15, 2013

  • Business tax returns due
  • 2nd quarter tax installment due

September 15, 2013

  • 3rd quarter tax installment due

September 30, 2013

  • Last day to electronically file your tax returns with NETFILE

December 15, 2013

  • 4th quarter tax installment due

Important UK Tax Dates for 2013

Listed below are some of the most important UK tax dates and deadlines in 2013 for small businesses and sole proprietors:

January 31, 2013

  • Online Self Assessment tax returns due for 2011/ 2012
  • Self Assessment balancing payments due for 2011/2012
  • First Self Assessment tax payment due for 2012/2013

February 28, 2013

  • 5% surcharge added to unpaid tax balance

April 6, 2013

  • First day of the new tax year

April 19, 2013

  • Outstanding PAYE payments and Class 1 NI Contributions due for 2012/2013 if you employ staff
    *note – as of April 2013, all employers must report PAYE information to HMRC using a new system (Real Time Information, RTI).

May 31, 2013

  • Last day to provide P60 form to employees

July 6, 2013

  • Forms P9D, P11D, and P11D(d) due

July 19, 2013

  • Class 1A NI Contributions payments due

October 31, 2013

  • Paper Self Assessment tax return due

December 30, 2013

  • Online Self Assessment form for 2012/2013 must be submitted so that unpaid tax under £3,000 can be collected via your PAYE tax code

Other Dates to Remember

Remember to keep track of any dates you have related to payroll if you have employees. You may also want to calculate your business expenses once a month so you can keep track of them throughout the year.
