The FreshBooks Story
In the Beginning
The FreshBooks story begins back in January 2003, when Mike was running a four-person design agency. When it came to billing clients, Word and Excel were frustrating to use and weren’t built to create professional looking invoices. Then one day something happened that makes every small business owner cringe: he accidentally saved over an old invoice. Knowing there had to be a better way, Mike decided to create it himself. Over the next two weeks, he coded up a solution that became the foundation of what is now FreshBooks.
Home Grown in Toronto
Since these humble beginnings, FreshBooks has moved out of the basement (and then moved 3 more times) and now consists of over 300 employees. More than 24 million people have used FreshBooks to send, receive, print and pay invoices. Today FreshBooks has paying customers in over 160 countries. If you look at just North America, no one except QuickBooks Online has more paying subscribers than FreshBooks, making FreshBooks the #1 cloud accounting solution designed exclusively for small business owners; whether you’re venturing out on your own or have been running your own agency or firm for years.
Shaping the World for Self-Employed Professionals
If you are a service-based business, FreshBooks is designed for you. If you are a designer, a marketing agency, a plumber, an IT professional, a lawyer, an architect, a web professional – if you create value for your customers by applying your time and expertise to other people’s problems – FreshBooks is built specifically for you. We uphold a longstanding tradition of providing extraordinary customer service and building a product that helps save you time because we know you went into business to pursue your passion and serve your customers – not to learn accounting.
The first “office” was Mike’s parents’ basement and we made sure to fluff the pillows whenever we had meetings in the living room.
The 4Es mantra was born! We only had one meeting room and it was nicknamed “The Room of Secrets”.
Fashion District North
FreshBooks made the cover of Entrepreneur Magazine, ordered 2 pallets worth and shipped them out to customers in celebration.
We made our first mobile app. We made the list for the Top Employers in Canada 2013.
Office Move to the Junction
Our move to the Junction spurred the opening of 4 coffee shops and 3 sandwich shops. We really (really) like food.
New FreshBooks App Design
For the first time in FreshBooks’ history, we redesigned and launched a new version of the app
