Meet the FreshBooks Team
Mike McDerment is the co-founder and CEO of FreshBooks, planet earth’s #1 cloud accounting solution designed for small business owners. In 2003, Mike built FreshBooks for his design firm, scratched his own itch, then moved into his parent’s basement for 3.5 years to get FreshBooks off the ground. Since then over 5,000,000 people have used FreshBooks to save time billing and collect billions of dollars. Mike and his team dedicate themselves to executing extraordinary experiences everyday for small business owners who want to focus on the work they love, instead of on their paperwork.
In addition to being a co-founder of FreshBooks, Joe is also a tenured professor at an Ontario University. In 2000 Joe received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Victoria, specializing in the development of efficient algorithms. Following his degree, he spent two years on a prestigious NSERC post-doc visiting Charles University (Czech Republic), the University of Sydney (Australia), and the University of Toronto (Canada). Joe’s most important role at FB: making sure the beer fridge remains well stocked.
VP Operations (Co-Founder)
Levi is a professional engineer with a BEng from the University of Victoria. Before joining FreshBooks, Levi managed projects at Apex Systems Integrators Inc., where his clients included Canadian Tire, Nestlé, and Parmalat. Levi is a systems integration specialist and has led multi-platform integrations with technologies such as: Oracle, SAP, .NET, Windows CE and Pocket PC. An ultimate frisbee, volleyball and basketball player, we suspect he may have stuffed toy dinosaurs hidden in his condo, such is the level of his support for the Toronto Raptors.
Jeff is a consummate perfectionist and ace designer. Jeff-fun includes creating awesome web sites, hockey and snowboarding, where he will not hesitate to take on any double black diamond he comes across. Jeff is also obsessed with washing his car (some say his left arm is twice the size of his right arm because of this). See what Jeff’s up to by visiting his website or checking his twitter updates.
Daniel supports the FreshBooks team by coordinating customer feedback and marketing initiatives into each release. Daniel graduated from the U of T’s Computer Science program and also worked for Biz-zone Internet Group Inc. before joining the FreshBooks team. In his spare time, Daniel likes to tweak his computer, work on his tennis game, and hit the local Cineplex for the latest blockbusters.
Director of IT
Did you know that Rich Lafferty invented ice? Despite this he lives modestly with wife Candice and cat Rasha, one of whom has floofy white feets. Rich leads a team of intrepid system administrators, constantly redefining the word “system” to include servers, phone systems, refrigerators, coat racks, octopuses, and pieces of string, and provides the office with a steady stream of cat videos. Sometimes he stares at the wall for hours on end.
Customer Support Manager
Fresh out of the University of Waterloo, equipped with a math degree and boundless enthusiasm, Grace is our first FreshBooks employee dedicated entirely to helping our customers. I guess you could call her the ‘invoice of reason’. When she isn’t answering your questions, you can usually find her playing outside, talking to strangers, playing for the Argonotes or making her co-workers groan with her witty one-liners. She’s game for anything and flies by the seat of her own pants because she knows life is short. After all, time flies like an arrow and fruit flies like a banana.
Office & Employee Services Manager
Originally from Africa - the land of the Maasai and where the big game roam free. Asmita studied in Nairobi before moving to Canada and brings extensive office administration experience to her position as she has worked for several multinational corporations in Toronto. In her free time, you can find her at the gym or volunteering for charitable organizations.
Momchil brings plenty of quality assurance experience to the FreshBooks team, having worked for Bodog, amongst others. He works alongside developers and managers to constantly improve the awesome FreshBooks product by flushing out existing glitches and ensuring new functionality integrates smoothly into the existing system. Momchil is a UofT graduate with degrees in Computer Science, Criminology and Mathematics. Alongside his fascination for computers and modern technology, Momchil is also extremely passionate about cars. In his free time Momchil builds websites, bikes along the lake and practices TaeKwon-Do.
Tim’s mesolimbic pathway is constantly flooded with dopamine when he’s at FreshBooks — That is to say, he’s elated to be here. Studying and working in a variety of fields and locations on planet Earth has allowed Tim to develop a sharp brain for interpersonal communication and a knack for empathy. Add his experiences in tech into the mix, and you’ve got yourself a support rock-star. When not figuring out the functions and bio-pathway of the Inward Rectifier Potassium Ion Channels, you can usually find Tim perfecting techniques on the piano, volunteering and singing in a choir, playing video games, practice photography, blog, watching Disney movies, and drinking down a pint of Dole Whip with friends.
Beatriz brings to the table a wide range of experience in the IT/Tech world. As a self-proclaimed geek she loves technology, media and video games. Still a kid-at-heart, she enjoys to be silly and random. With an inquisitive-mind and a love of people she wants to know what makes your business tick. To relax and calm the chattering monkeys in her head she enjoys reading (her favourite is Latin American literature) and watching movies, especially foreign films.
Head of Product
Casey is our Head of Product at FreshBooks. He’s the guy helping the team prioritize and design all of the great features that go into making FreshBooks so awesome. After 7 years as a Program Manager at Microsoft, Casey has settled in Toronto for the long haul. He has the slogan “Fortunae Nihil” (Leave Nothing to Chance) tattooed on his arm to remind him that great things are made by great teams with focus and planning. He plays a solo rockabilly show every night for his wife and kids, and does not dream of someday being on-stage. Not at all, seriously.
Mark comes to FreshBooks with a background in design and painting from the Ontario College of Art and Design, and a passion for all things code related. A passionate and involved member of the open source community, Mark spends much of free time hacking away on various projects and blogging about what he’s learned. In his free time he enjoys a variety of gaming, reading, cycling and snowboarding.
After spending his college years in professional kitchens, Adam joins us as part of the network operations team. He is passionate about shiny new gadgets, online security and cryptography, and conspiracy theory. In his free time Adam enjoys letting his friend poke him repeatedly with needles and can often be found in a pub, pint in hand.
QA Team Lead
As a fresh Computer Science graduate from the University of Waterloo, Kiet found he was a lot better at breaking code than fixing it - so Quality Assurance it was. He joins the FreshBooks team after having spent over 7 years poking and prodding at all manners of software programs, systems and people. In his spare time, he dabbles at web site development, martial arts and tech gadgets. Kiet is also a closet Bimmer and Toronto Raptors fan.
They say Steve was formed in the bosom of FreshBooks itself - his roar is long and loud. Taught never to give up on a customer and that creating a happy user is the greatest glory you could achieve. Beneath his explosive and elegantly chiselled physique, lives the soft comfort of a harvest night. A place where love radiates like a midnight campfire amongst old friends. Always there with a helping hand - an incredibly massive and powerfully awesome helping hand.
Taylor isn’t your typical finance guy. In fact, you may have talked to him on the phone or via email if you’re a FreshBooks customer. He spent three years on the support team and that’s where he found himself to be comfortable with numbers and accounting. Having had a myriad of experiences, he brings a unique perspective to the world of financial analysis. For fun, Taylor runs sports night at FreshBooks, leads a choir club, participates in the improv community and in an axe throwing league, plays board games, and drinks good rum. He also played in a band for three years called Tea and Coffee.
Richard is a U of T computer engineering graduate and has been in the web development industry ever since. Outside of serious work, he enjoys cooking, baking and of course, eating and drinking. To balance the calorie intakes, he is training for his first half marathon. He has a soft spot for all animals and is a volunteer dog sitter for those in need. FYI, he makes a mean souffle.
Jeremy is an award-winning / self deprecating art director with a wealth of experience across diverse sectors in advertising. Called “a one man revolution on the way we use video, computers and our bodies to create art” by Filmmaker magazine, he also draws on a successful career as a new media artist. When asked about his spare time Jeremy could only list more work that he’d done. Dude also has a Masters in Fine art from Syracuse University among a bunch of other degrees.

Tim looks at life from a sea gull’s outlook on food. If it’s in front of you, you can eat it. In other words, you can do anything that is put in front of you. He is a recent York University graduate equipped with a business degree and has experience in customer service. He took his communication skills abroad to Seoul, South Korea to teach english. He has been a die-hard Raptors fan since day 1, with Alvin Williams being his favourite Raptor of all time. Photography has recently become his newest hobby, which goes well with his love for traveling. His main goal in life: “At some point in my life I will approach the check-in counter of an airport only to be told that there is no longer any room on my passport for another stamp”.
A graduate from U of T Computer Science, Kevin enjoys software development and sees programming as a way of life, rather than just a career. He spends his leisure time hacking around functional programming languages and blogs about his learning experience. He has knowledge of useless facts such as flags and capitals of the countries around the world, and he believes the geek shall inherit the earth. His other enjoyments in life include light and classy music, armchair soccer club management, and playing with his two pet rats.
HR Business Partner
Penny joins the FreshBooks team with 5 years of experience in the recruiting field. Hailing from rural Ontario she was drawn to the big city simply for the fact she could watch more than three channels on TV. Penny started her career working at a boutique agency helping small software companies hire top talent. In her spare time she enjoys yoga, attending the ballet, cooking up a storm and spending time with family. She is known as being highly organized and once received a label maker as a present - which is still one of her favourite gifts she’s received.
Erin is thrilled to be joining the FreshBooks team. She promises to bring her A-Game and revolutionize the world - or at the very least, create some cool stuff. Erin’s favourite colour is blue, just like FreshBooks, she loves cooking, eating chocolate and making art. When not in the city, Erin can be found canoeing in Algonquin Park or traveling the world.
Director of Product Management
Hailing from Toronto, Avrum graduated from the University of Toronto in Computer Engineering in 2007 and moved to Seattle the same year to join Microsoft. After working for teams across Office, Windows, and Search, Avrum moved back to Toronto and joined the product team at FreshBooks in 2011. Avrum works closely with designers and developers to create extraordinary experiences for FreshBooks’ 5 million small business customers, so they can spend less time managing their paperwork and more time on what they love to do. Outside of FreshBooks, Avrum can be found complaining about restaurants that don’t meet expectations, thinking of clever Facebook status updates, and traveling.
Fueled by his passion for technology, Anton decided to lock himself away deep, deep into the corners of the University of Toronto, studying the dark magic of computer science and practicing the ancient art of web development. In 2011, Anton emerged from his trials, ready to take on all the exciting challenges at FreshBooks! When not madly coding away on his computer, Anton likes to sing about his favourite things, play video games, watch movies, and discovering awesome music.
Product Communications Manager
Amanda hails from the world of online publishing and has been a champion for good ideas since well before the advent of Twitter. When she’s not comparing FreshBooks to a cultural revolution on par with the invention of the wheel, she’s likely recounting the outcome of her latest culinary experiment or relating an intrepid tale about her adorable terrier Rupert. Always armed with a notebook, her anthropology background comes in handy when she’s laying down the story of the moment. One of her short-term goals is to make a nice picnic quilt for Leafy and all his friends.
An Expat from Ohio, Jason spends his days as a Linux SysAdmin and his free time enjoying a myriad of hobbies. Board and tabletop gaming, watching werewolf movies, cycling, and vegan cooking keep him occupied. Any time he gets the chance to travel, he takes the opportunity to learn everything possible about local rituals, particularly those related to body modification, ahead of time and does his best to witness them in person.
Theresa grew up in the suburbs of Mississauga, but has a penchant for traveling. She brings to FreshBooks her positivity and loves giving out hugs. Passionate about food, she can be found gazing at their deliciousness on the Internet and trying out new recipes. She’s always up for trying anything new and never turns down chances to karaoke.
After a summer of exploring various parts of South East Asia and being chased down a mountain by a pack of monkeys, I decided that my goal after graduation would be to find a company and job that can provide similar high concentrations of awesome and here I am at FreshBooks. I am a huge fan of movies, music, and taking photos of all the places I have gotten to see while traveling around the world. I recently graduated from the University of Toronto with a major in psychology, so helping people is a thing I love to do and technology has always been a passion of mine (so feel free to come chat with me about the latest and greatest!). A quick fun fact about me is that I have been awarded the Eagle Scout rank; an award only given to three percent of all scouts around the world and gives me something similar with Neil Armstrong and Steven Spielberg.
Vonnell began her tenure at FreshBooks in sales and branched off to start the A-Team, which is dedicated to working with accounting professionals. Unafraid of the concussions and bruises generally acquired from jumping headfirst into empty swimming pools, she found herself on the development team as a Scrum Master. In her spare time, you’ll find her at the park, eating or cooking a meal or trying (unsuccessfully) to propagate succulents.
Team Lead, Accounting
Fabiola comes to FreshBooks with a big smile, dedicated work ethic and a magnetic personality. Fabi, as her friends know her, is always building long lasting personal and professional friendships. As a graduate from York University’s Schulich School of Business and 4 years selling aerospace and military parts, Fabi offers a great wealth of knowledge in Sales and Customer Relations. The International Bachelor of Business Administration degree she received also gave her experience abroad and took her to Mexico where she further developed her studies at the University Tec de Monterrey. During her travels in Mexico, she developed an immunity to tequila but a weakness towards tacos, tortillas and tortas. When Fabi is not organizing a party or creeping on Facebook, she spends her time playing soccer, softball and going for long walks with her family’s big loveable yellow Lab, River (El Ingeniero).
Natalia came to FreshBooks with 6 years of experience in testing web applications. As a quality assurance tester, she has had passion for excellence and a “test to break” attitude. Natalia is a very positive and enjoyable person. She also loves ice-cream and stuffed toy animals. Natalia’s hobbies includes photography and teaching Ballet to children. She really enjoys changes. If nothing new is happening than she will go crazy and start moving furniture around the house.
Senior Product Manager
Melina walks the socially-exciting line between complete seriousness and total ridiculousness. She is disturbingly competitive but has found this to be a delightful boon to her product management career. Melina is a nature-lover and amateur arboriculturalist with a wicked photic sneeze reflex. She graduated with a BFA in film from Ryerson University, but quickly moved into software due to a love of rapidly evolving technologies (including—but not limited to—robot uprisings, sentient internets and living above and/or below the sea).
Sandy was recently released from a Kinder Surprise opened by an unsuspecting child. In need of a home, she was adopted by the kind folk at FreshBooks and in return, she welcomes and trains other new hires joining the family. With a degree in drama, biochemistry and education, she’s taught in Japan and the UK and is an avid traveler. In her spare time, she likes to write for the LRMC, brush up on her languages, act, give it her all at karaoke and burn cookies by accident.
Team Lead, Development
After graduating from University of Calgary, Shaun spent some time in Seattle at a big company before returning back home to the Red Mile. Now he’s adapting to life in the east, in a city many times larger than he’s ever experienced. When he’s not writing code, he spends time playing sports and dabbling in electronic music.
After obtaining a degree in Archaeology from the University of Toronto, Jeff quickly became disenfranchised with the title due to the lack of Indiana Jones hats handed out at commencement. Disgruntled Jeff turned to one of his other passions, software development. Jeff has spent the latter part of last century and all of this century working tirelessly in web development with a focus on destroying all rotten code he comes in contact with his patented ‘beautiful code bomb’. In his last position Jeff headed up a team at Panvista Media developing mobile applications for large law services firms such as Norton Rose and Paul Hastings. In his spare time…well Jeff has 3 kids and has no spare time so we’ll just leave it at that.
Wyatt’s a one man riot and polite to a fault. As a fresh grad from the University of Guelph, cows run in his blood, providing him with extreme amounts of energy and drive. He’s excited to hone his skills in customer service and code-craft as a new member of the team, and in his spare time he plays games, watches old science-fiction, and reads philosophical tomes.
Dustin joins the FreshBooks team with over 10 years of sales leadership, marketing and customer relations experience. With a knack of learning languages, great business acumen and a positive attitude, he strives in helping all those in contact with him achieve their goals. Having run his own business in the past, he understands the intricacies you face while running your business and tries to be as proactive as possible. During his off time you can find Dustin playing Italian card games and dancing! He is a fantastic salsa and merengue dancer, something that comes natural from his Hispanic heritage. OLE!
Queue, eh? Splendid!
Toronto’s foremost hipster-in-denial, Craig arrives at FreshBooks with a love of both well-designed software and things that go to 11. Bullet-hell shooters from Japan? Check. The latest and loudest Scandinavian metal bands? Check. Sensory-overloading movies? Triple-check. Armed with a Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Applied Science from McMaster University, he looks forward to tackling the new challenges thrown his way, be they software defects or battles in various fighting games. When not going beyond the max, Craig can be found geocaching, playing squash, or discussing music on The Zero Check podcast (http://thezerocheck.com).
Whenever there’s something amiss, Always remember to follow your bliss. You never know where you will go, Not until you are open to grow. Every step that you take on your way, Will enrich those around you everyday. Open your mind and you’ll see, Occasion is what you make it to be.
Manager of Development
Steve is a Manager of Development hailing from sunny Southern Ontario, where his family lives and still operates a family farm. Steve occassionally visits family there to see some sunlight and operate heavy machinery. Steve has a potentially unhealthy addiction to gadgets and new smartphones, so it only makes sense that he makes mobile apps at FreshBooks. While not cooking Italian or playing video/board games, he has also spent time at a large broadcast television company, a gigantic agency, a small print-to-web company, and an even smaller tech startup that no longer exists. Steve graduated from the Software Engineering program at the University of Western Ontario.
Associate Product Marketer
Originally from Ottawa, Rob moved to Toronto in order to emote and breathe his way to a theatre degree from York University. Afterwards he spent close to two years on the Rockstar Support Team at FreshBooks before moving over to the Marketing Team. Rob loves patio season, bad movies, and laughing (generally at his own expense). His one Kryptonite is a warm brownie and it is surely the easiest way to win over his heart.
Matt joins the FreshBooks team with over 9 years of exceptional customer service experience in a wide range of industries from big banks to small business. He also developed a passion for photography while visiting many of Australia’s scenic locations. When spending time online, he frequents many travel and healthy living related blogs. Matt strives to live life as if everyday is the Best. Day. Ever!
Jaclyn is a Copywriter for FreshBooks, with a background that starts in the theatre, slides through some business-y stuff and pauses ever so slightly in the land of wordsmithery. Her favourite things in the world (in order of priority) are Poutine, Camping and Bicycling. If all three can be done simultaneously - Zen has been achieved.
Online Marketing Manager

Lindsay often feels caught in between eras, adrift in the fabric of space-time. While she enjoys the poetical lyricism of today’s young Canadian folk artists, she finds herself belting out Joplin’s high notes when she thinks no one is watching. While she loves FreshBooks, she also loves not-so-fresh books, having amassed a modest collection of 18th and 19th century books. She loves her Blackberry, but still can’t figure out where she’s supposed to put the quarter. Lindsay has a passion for engaging people and learning their stories, whether in person, on the phone, in an email, or in the pages of an antiquarian book. As a dual citizen of both the present and the past, she knows the one thing that never goes out of style is a good character.
Senior Product Marketing Manager
Having embarked on an arduous quest to cure baldness without success, Faraz finally decided to dedicate his time elsewhere. With a Mechanical Engineering degree from Queen’s University in hand, he joined Research In Motion, where he spent more than 3 years in various customer-facing and online community leadership roles. When he’s not working with the ridiculously talented people at FreshBooks to take products to market, Faraz plays guitar, watches lots of footie (aka, “soccer”) and also runs his own digital marketing agency on the side.

It’s safe to say that Alex is fresh in every respect of the word. Much to co-worker Rob Guenette’s delight, Alex is now officially the youngest FreshBooks employee. Coming straight out of York University with a double major in Sociology and Communication Studies, he is ready to groove and has a lot to prove. Alex knows there is no age restrictions to helping others, and is completely thrilled to have a full-time job doing just that. When he’s not at work, you can find him jamming with his guitar, dabbling in photography, and landing a 747 jumbo jet in Hong Kong (just don’t remind him it’s on a simulator).
Marguerite des Trois Maisons
Marguerite’s interests are a superset of the following: being geeky, eating tasty food, plants, and fractals. One day, she will be an awesome computer programmer who will change the world. Her pilgrimage has led her from her hometown, Toronto, to the University of Waterloo, and most recently has brought her to FreshBooks to learn from the gurus who are rumoured to exist here.
Aaron recently earned a Bachelor of Design degree from the York/Sheridan Program in Design and has an insatiable hunger for solving design and usability problems. He spends a lot of his spare time reading about and experimenting with cutting-edge web design tools and trends, but still manages to get regular and hefty doses of fresh air while outside running or cycling.

Phil lives his life 402 meters at a time. That’s the Canadian equivalent of a 1/4 mile. Being an adrenaline addict, he’s spent several years playing tournament level paintball. After he perfected his newfound (and highly useless talent), he set his sights on something more “normal”. Now working towards racing and completing the Ironman World Championships Triathlon, Phil has picked up photography in his downtime. Landing at FreshBooks, Phil knew he could put his love for helping people to good use. No problem too big or small, Phil is always up for the challenge of making someone’s day!

Marvin is your regular run-of-the-mill IT dude, types his password two fingers at a time, and is more PFY than BOFH. The neckbeard isn’t there yet, but it’s something he promises to get to, eventually. In his “free” time, he enjoys running and hopes to one day qualify for Boston!
Andre is a QA Analyst with a software engineering background. Hailing from the beautiful but often-battered 3rd Polish Republic, he can take a punch and keep on swinging. Pretty easy considering his awesome physique and large frame. In his spare time he practices karate, team sports (team drinking!), and exercises his spiritual side-via painting and novice-level spanish guitar.

Mich is from Scotland and has been a CA since 2010. Toronto is the 7th city that he has lived and worked in. So you could say he likes to travel. In addition to this, he likes all sports—especially tennis, volleyball and football (proper football where you kick a ball with your foot—not North American football which he likes to refer to as ‘hand-egg’). He once beat Andy Murray at tennis (in a game, he lost the other 12).
Proudly born and raised in Fort Erie, Michael is excited to join the FreshBooks product team. After graduating from U of T, Michael worked at a large industrial gases company in a variety of marketing roles. After completing his MBA, he co-founded two startups in Toronto where he became used to sleeping on couches. When not at work, he is likely planning his next adventure into the mountains of BC.
Matt is a “professional” musician, having been paid for performing on more than one occasion (like, at least twice). He has a recurring dream where through an unlikely sequence of events, he is drafted into the Foo Fighters. He attends as many of their shows as possible, just in case. Like a good Canadian, Matt enjoys playing hockey and, sometimes, a good cigar (Monties, anyone?). He has a background in QA and is a Certified Scrum Master who loves helping teams become high-performing.
From a town with one stoplight named Binbrook, Ian moved to Toronto in 2000 for school and has been here ever since. A graphic design graduate, he found he liked the tools better then the trade and spent the next several years doing support for Apple. Terrified of heights, allergic to bees, french bulldog aficionado and toy collector, Ian loves drawing and photography (well, mainly taking photos of toys and dogs).

Ryan grew up in freezing-cold Manitoba. All he could do to stay warm in the winters was huddle by the heat of a Commodore Vic-20 and type in programs from Compute! Magazine, which triggered a lifelong interest in computers. Ryan has a B.Sc. from Brandon University in Computer Science, which he barely used in 12 years in the insurance industry. In his spare time, Ryan likes to condense his life story into 385 characters.

Passionate would describe Rich well when considering all things Science, Space, Engineering, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Rich has been employed in customer service positions for over 10 years and is excited to learn from and grow with FreshBooks.

Senior Mobile Developer
A graduate of Queen’s University, Michael started his career in mobile development using J2ME and BREW on old candy bar and flip phones. When the iPhone was released, he quickly dropped these archaic technologies to learn Objective-C and drank the kool-aid, “Apple can do no wrong”! Michael has been developing software professionally for 8 years and enjoys solving mobile-related problems, from optimizing network traffic to working with systems with limited resources. When he’s not programming, he enjoys playing volleyball and ball hockey.
Alexandre hails from France by the Alps where he studied Electronics and Software Engineering. When not running efficient plans, Andrea can be found on the ice perfecting her speed skating technique. She is the proud owner of four pairs of skates.
Dileshni is a die hard sports fanatic and a child of the sea (she’s from the island of Sri Lanka after all). So it’s no surprise that most of her hobbies revolve around water. If you need a scuba diving buddy, call her! After working for 5 years at UofT, she jumped at the chance to move her code ninja skills to FreshBooks. She loves working on new projects and asking others endless questions about their projects! When she’s not obsessing over the Toronto Raptors or playing a water sport, she enjoys mentoring at Girls Learning Code. True fact: will code for cookies.
Originally a descendant of pharaohs, Leena moved to Canada in 2006. She identifies as a “code monkey” and loves that she can create something out of nothing (except for some ones and zeroes). Leena is very excited about working at FreshBooks for the great product, the awesome company values, and for the dogs. But mostly for the dogs. She has two dogs of her own and speaks “dog” fluently. Leena brings to FreshBooks her experience and passion for mobile development, as well as her very own brand of weirdness. When Leena is not glued to a computer, you can find her practicing her dog speak, playing soccer, obsessing over robots, eating chocolate, or jumping out of airplanes.
Raised on a tourist-attraction flower farm in Ontario, Nora is no stranger to, well, meeting strangers. An obsessive learner, she knew she needed a career where knowing a little about a lot of things was an asset. After short stints in model booking and actual matchmaking, she’s spent the last 5 years finding top talent for ad agencies and startups. When she’s not making matches for FreshBooks, you can find her planning her next tattoo, obsessing over all that is or might be spooky, playing strategy games, and raising the world’s silliest husky.
Alan started his first business at 17 simply because he was bored in high school. He began studying biochemistry but ended up graduating with a degree in Business. Since those blurry days, Alan has started 2 companies and has been a product/marketing manager at various software companies. His brain is constantly thinking of ways to improve products and if it wasn’t for playing soccer his brain would likely explode due to dangerous levels of entropy. Alan loves being a product manager for such an awesome product!
Desktop Support Specialist
Byron is no good at half-measures. Whether pursuing music, fitness, or computers, whatever catches his attention is vacuumed up with extreme prejudice. Byron joins FreshBooks to bring his hardware and software support expertise to bear on any computer bold enough to defy the IT team.
Email Marketing Manager
Laurie comes from the wilds of Etobicoke, where she dreamed of becoming only one thing: an Ewok. After those dreams were harshly crushed, she instead got a Psychology degree from the University of Waterloo, which is now put into practice by analyzing absolutely everything, including FreshBooks email marketing campaigns. When she’s not shedding silent tears with every email unsubscribe request, you can find her watching baseball, traveling, swimming in lakes, killing it on a dodgeball court, reading (too many) books, baking ridiculous cakes, trying to give ducks hugs, getting distracted by shiny, glittery objects or petting anything soft. If she has any time left over from all of that, she writes about music and other stuff for The Little Red Umbrella, and works behind the scenes on Toronto’s illustrious Trampoline Hall.

Born, raised, and schooled in Waterloo, Adam is thrilled to be joining the Product team at FreshBooks in Toronto. Adam is a huge sports fan, humbled over the years as both a Leafs fan and golfer (the two seem to go naturally together). A plane ticket in hand, and music in his ears make him one happy camper!

Born in Poland, Ania has spent most of her life in Canada. She studied at Queen’s University, graduating with Bachelors of Statistics, Education, and Computer Science. She also studied at the University of Edinburgh, which she barely survived due to ingesting too many fried Mars bars. Ania has worked at big and small software companies, before she found her way to FreshBooks, which she proclaims as “just right”. These days, Ania trains, competes, and coaches at the Don Rowing Club. Refusing to believe that the Olympics are not in her future, she works hard on growing taller, using large amounts of trail mix to fuel her dreams.

He’s worked with a diversity of clients, ranging from the retail sector all the way to national educational institutions. When not sending GIFs from The Simpsons’ Golden Age (seasons 4-10), he’s usually running or biking around the city, finding the new hot restaurant, or getting on a plane to visit his brother Jeff Close in NY or heading to some far off destination.

Even though he’s lived in Toronto for over a decade, David still considers himself a country boy at heart. He graduated from George Brown College with a Bachelors in Hospitality Operations Management and immediately following that moved to South Korea for a year to teach. When not drinking excessive amounts of coffee, you can find David rummaging through thrift stores, playing an obscure version of soccer called futsal, or renovating his family home.
Sean grew up in London Ontario but lived in Montreal in between the earliest and latest Wolfenstein releases (W3D and The New Order). Sean went to McGill University where he completed a B.A. in Cultural Studies after taking ten years off in his fourth year to start a business. Needless to say, Sean’s tour of duty in Cultural Studies explains his great affection for all the movie posters strewn about the FreshBooks office—Apocalypse Now is his favourite movie of all time. Sean believes that there is a process behind most of what we do in life, and that recognizing the process and making it visible is what allows us to continuously improve. This is how Sean approaches agile philosophy and his role as a Scrum Master. It also explains his inability to get through a Warhammer 40k game without trying to streamline the rules.

VP Human Resources
Tracey is passionate about people, helping others be the best that they can be and making sure that FreshBooks has the most talented team in the WORLD! She has spent her HR career in a variety of industries and loves the challenge that comes along with learning new things. Tracey grew up in the beautiful countryside of South Western Ontario and moved to the “big city” after completing university. Today, living in the “burbs” in a household of boys, it is all about sports, sports, sports and video games. When she does get a moment alone you’ll find her reading a great book, playing soccer or cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays.
Stephen comes to FreshBooks with a background in education, mathematics, and customer support. When he’s not assisting clients, he’s cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays or conquering lands and saving the world (in fake electronic lands only existing on his Playstation 4). Does P=NP? No one really knows, but that won’t stop him from losing sleep at night over it.
Michael is a self-proclaimed code wizard, tabletop general, and space enthusiast. He is a very efficient caffeine-to-code converter, and enjoys all things geeky. He graduated from University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Computing, and has lost count of the number of times he has moved.
Lindsay’s fascination with human behaviour led her to a degree in Psychology from Queen’s University. She grew up in Montreal but was drawn to Toronto due to its vibrant tech scene where she began her career in healthcare technology. Lindsay loves to travel to places that require at least a 10-hour flight. She’s also an avid hockey player and yogi.
Sabeer considers himself an engineer without borders: he grew up in 5 countries, is fluent in 3 languages, and experienced as a computer, electrical, biomedical, and software engineer. His love for technology and impossible visions of what he wants to create stems from a love for all things science fiction and fantasy. In the rare moments when he’s not coding or reading, he likes to tutor math/programming, chill out with family/friends, watch movies, take long walks, gorge on junk food, and talk to himself (ok, so he talks to himself more than just “rarely”).
Originally from Brazil, Fernando came to Canada to pursue a PhD in theoretical physics at UBC. After a few years thinking about what happens when you fall into a black hole, he decided it was time to give the tech industry a shot. With a newfound obsession for data science and machine learning, Fernando packed his recycled, organic, fair trade bags in Vancouver, and moved to Toronto to join the FreshBooks marketing team as a data analyst. In his free time, Fernando can be found playing music, lifting things up and putting them down at the gym, or picking up a new hobby and getting fixated on it.
Public Relations Manager
As the PR Manager, Dianna is responsible for getting the word out and making sure small-business owners (and your grandmother) are aware that FreshBooks is the bomb dot com. She has a background in the tech sector and has worked with both B2B and B2C industry leaders and challenger brands to build awareness, generate demand, and elevate market standings. When she’s not busy PRing, she can be found indulging (to an unhealthy degree) in her addictions: the UFC, food, and books of all shapes, sizes, and genres. She also has a penchant for coercing everyone around her into eating their own weight in goodies that are high in calories, carbs, and fats.
Originally from Niagara Falls, Jesse ventured to Toronto in search of bigger and better things. After studying Film Studies at York U, he took time to discover himself and learn where his talents lie. He’s excited to be a part of the Support team and aims to become a true support hero. As a self-declared pop culture geek, he loves to talk about film and his comic book collection. If you don’t spoil his favourite TV shows, he’ll love you forever.
Calvin was born and raised in the wheat fields of Saskatchewan. After graduating from university, he got a sweet gig building video games in Saskatoon. A love of big city life and a fear of prairie winters brought him to Toronto. When he isn’t programming, he enjoys playing hacky sack, cycling and cooking tasty things in his slow cooker.
Growing up in Toronto’s suburbia, Winston was thrown into a town of about 4000 working in his family’s restaurant. Culture shock, isolation, Egg Rolls and the flaming lick of a thorny whip comprise his fondest memories of that decade. Often euphemized as, “a character building experience”, he likens his escape to the end of, “The Shawshank Redemption” but without the sewer drain, laundry room, and Morgan Freeman. His pursuits are: (re)discovering the meaning of life and freedom, reading/writing, astrophysics/astronomy and some other (unbelievably) nerdy hobbies.
Rishi loves to run, meditate and engage with the community. He finds great joy in not only solving problems, but also in identifying them. Thinking progressively, he is continuously looking for improvements. “Nurture your team, and results will follow” says Rishi. Oh yeah, he knows a thing or two about programming pythons and rabbits.

Josh joins the FreshBooks team hot off the presses of design school. After completing an internship at Mozilla, and designing at TIFF for the summer, he’s ready to start crafting extraordinary experiences at FreshBooks that are pixel (pretty-damn) perfect. He is a constant learner which is why you’ll most likely find him glued to the latest tech/design blog post, and has two amazing little girls at home who occupy the majority of his social media feed.

See some of Colin’s artwork and jewellery.

Paul has been developing since his mother gave him a book of games for a Commodore 64, then threw away the disk, forcing him to type them in. Once he learned he could begin fighting ogres sooner by skipping the lines starting with REM there was no stopping him. He’s a frequent speaker at technology conferences, and challenges co-workers to a bake-off at the drop of a hat.
Katie loves design that’s full of fun, bold colour and playful typography, which is why she was excited to join Freshbooks. Hannele fell in love with programming in high school, and has been developing one thing or another ever since. After some time in the support trenches, she’s finally worked her way to a development position, while keeping the perspective gained in dealing with real live users. She is both Finnish and Canadian, yet somehow missed the hockey gene. But you will occasionally catch her on a karaoke tear, imparting the immortal lyrics of Bonnie Tyler.
Dionne grew up on the mean streets of Walkerton—and by mean, we mean nice, incredibly nice. Growing up with four siblings, she learned to eat as quickly as possible, so she could compete for the best of the seconds. This competitive spirit was further developed during her time studying SYDE, where she spent many evenings honing her board gaming skills. Dionne loves to read, travel, and laugh, and is passionate about helping teams reach their potential, while having as much fun as possible along the way.
Nathan hails from the wet and blustery west coast of Ireland. A graduate of NUI, Galway, he spent a number of years working at networking giant Cisco Systems in the unified communications space. Growing tired of the incessant rain that is the Irish climate and looking for a new adventure, he caught a gust of wind (read: Boeing 757) and crossed the North Atlantic landing in Toronto. He joined FreshBooks with a mission to ship code. Outside of things tech-related, he likes eating, playing sports, watching films, and keeping busy in general. Nathan is the embodiment of the phrase “dance like nobody’s watching”.

He holds a B.Math degree with Honours Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, but don’t ask him to do math in his head. When he finds the time he also enjoys snowboarding, cycling, beer brewing (and drinking), all things LEGO, and travelling.

Senior Manager, Talent Development
Ritva is thrilled to be joining FreshBooks’ Talent Development team. After years spent working in the OD trenches, she believes that we will only become the world’s #1 cloud accounting solution by optimizing our amazing talent. She is a staunch McGillian, having obtained both her BA and MBA there. Ritva suffers from a severe case of wanderlust. To tame this lifelong syndrome, she practises Chinese calligraphy, kayaks over to the Islands and hunts for that perfect bowl of ramen here in Toronto. A rabid Tour de France fan, you’ll find that come July she is emotionally preoccupied for 3 weeks. Vive Le Tour!
After graduating from UofT with a degree in Neuroscience, Richard is trading his love for the brain to pursue a worthier cause: winning the hearts of FreshBooks’ customers. He knows it’s not going to be an easy road, but don’t let his inability to grow facial hair fool you; he’s absolutely possibly old enough to ride shotgun. Not everything in the world will make sense, and neither will he sometimes. The important thing is green mangoes. Hobbies include: introspective daydreaming, excessive use of unnecessary adjectives/adverbs, singing out of tune and writing fiction.

When he’s not playing video games, he’s outdoors skiing, hiking, or trail-running. This dude is obviously committed to UX at FreshBooks.

Then she was in search of a change: with over a decade’s worth of customer service experience, a genuine love for people, positive energy, the maximum amount of patience any one can ever have, you got a Support Rockstar. She enjoys cooking without recipes, working out (including paddling and yoga), and a nice glass of red wine.

Friends know him as an encyclopedia of random knowledge, and the guy who makes the best damn grilled cheese you’ve ever had. When he’s not cracking out code, you can find him planning his next travel adventure, checking out new restaurants in the city, cooking up new dishes at home, or trying the latest craft beer.
It’s no accident that even with the distraction of University and Film School, Dominic continues to return to what he loves. With hobbies seeing him lost at sea (SCUBA), falling off mountains (snowboarding) and climbing back up said mountains (rock climbing), Dominic now spends his time exploring the culinary world via continuing education at George Brown for obscure French Cuisine.
Tobi was raised in Lagos, Nigeria and came over to Canada to get a degree in Software Engineering at Carleton University. After graduating with a BFA from OCAD University, Deanna began seeking a career where she could implement her creative problem solving skills while maintaining her art practice. This type of compassion and empathy is what she is most excited to bring to the Support Team at FreshBooks. When she isn’t attached to her laptop by the fingertips, you can find her cooking for friends, experimenting with mixology, or spilling paint on her shoes at her studio.
With a background in Massage Therapy, Paramedics and Firefighting, it’s safe to say helping people is Bogdan’s passion. He also loves to paddle, workout, and on weekends, sit back in his mahogany chair and enjoy a glass of scotch from his collection, while reading mysteries and thrillers.
Remy started his career at FreshBooks in Recruitment, and recently made the switch over to Support. As a Business Graduate from the University of Windsor, he often went over to Detroit to watch NFL games. This led him to become one of the biggest Detroit Lions fan out there, and specifically a huge fan of their All-Pro Wide Receiver, Calvin Johnson. When he’s not helping our customers on the phone, Remy’s claim to fame is that he can dunk a basketball even though he’s under 6 ft. tall. Message him for any vertical leap questions that you might have.

Little is known about this handsome fellow before he joined FreshBooks as CEO Mike McDerment’s Shadow CEO. Since joining the Fresh Dogs his confidence has blossomed and he’s learned how to romp and play, while somehow still managing to look dignified. Around the new, larger FreshBooks office Munroe has proven to be a time-saver when somebody needs to grab a quick word with the CEO; you can always find Mike by following Munroe’s adoring gaze.
Chief Buoyancy Deliverer
If you see somebody randomly break into a smile of pure delight chances are Mecho has just bounded by. This energetic little guy was born at a farm just north of Toronto. He’s part cocker spaniel, part poodle and (judging by his incredible leaps of joy) part tiger. Despite being the smallest of the regular Fresh Dogs he can usually be found starting shenanigans with his larger mates, hugging and kissing coworkers (literally) or power napping near his dad, Momchil.
VP, Cross-Cultural Integration
Born on the streets of Thailand you might expect Gucci to be tough or standoffish. But after choosing Jason as his dad through rescue organization Soi Dog, Gucci has demonstrated tremendous positivity and adaptability. Science hasn’t created a perpetual motion machine yet, but that’s probably just because nobody has studied Gucci’s wagging tail……
