A successful, six-figure small business
Jules knows that small businesses are a big deal, but she can’t believe she’s going to be so big—literally.
“OMG, I might land on a digital billboard,” says the web developer, when we catch up a few weeks after filming her for FreshBooks’ 2026 “Small is Big” campaign. “It’s hilarious that I might have clients who will see me on a billboard.”
Jules’s clients would likely argue it’s much deserved. After all, her journey to appearing in nationwide advertisements as a successful small business owner—and a self-proclaimed “FreshBooks brand evangelist”—hasn’t always been a straight path.
“I've had to pick myself back up several times,” she says. And even after nearly two decades in business, Jules grappled with an ever-present sense of imposter syndrome. In a family of degree-carrying professionals, she hadn’t finished college, and it wasn’t until her 50s that she realized she had undiagnosed dyslexia.
“I had struggled because I didn’t know how to work with my brain yet,” she says. “I wanted to know what it felt like to be brilliant and a really successful businesswoman.”
Jules finally shrugged off the imposter syndrome last year, when she logged into FreshBooks and saw that she was going to hit the six-figure salary mark for the second year in a row.
It’s been validating—like, yeah, I really am a business.
Paving the path to success
Over the years, Jules became known not just for building functional and beautiful websites, but for her next-level customer care.
“I help people get really clear on their own business and who they are,” she explains. Key to this process is a thorough client discovery phase, which allows her to build SEO and AI-optimized websites that reflect her clients’ brand identity. Now based in Kingman, Arizona, her support extends far beyond the initial build of a website, including content writing and ongoing maintenance.
“I have really close relationships with my clients. I have the caregiver wiring, and that makes doing business hard because sometimes I'll give too much,” says Jules. “I'm endeavoring to be better at work-life balance, and FreshBooks helps with that.”
Instead of trying to “stumble through IRS stuff,” Jules relies on FreshBooks to help her manage her small business, with features like time tracking for hourly billing and set-it-and-forget-it recurring invoices.
“I don’t even have to think about invoices. The only thing I do at the end of the month is spend five minutes sending them,” she says.
The profit and loss statements give her a quick oversight into how her business is performing, and an accountant login makes tax time easy.
“Small businesses are good at what we do. Small businesses run America. But we’re really bad at bookkeeping,” she jokes.
FreshBooks takes that pressure off.”
A business solution for scaling, selling, and stepping down
FreshBooks is also key to developing plans for her retirement. Although Jules is a solopreneur, she uses the payroll feature to pay herself. This way, when and if she sells her business, she can prove to prospective buyers that it has the financial ability to support someone.
Until then, she’s not slowing down. Jules is set to launch a new brand for dog breeders, with custom websites powered by an AI-driven project system she designed herself. With a business model built on recurring revenue, FreshBooks will be there when she scales.
The goal? To have more time for her grandkids and to go out for drives in Daisy and Ruby, her two classic American cars—because while appearing on a billboard is a big deal, there are some things in life that matter more.
“I love FreshBooks. They solve things before I know I need them, and the support is really good,” says Jules. “It’s about relationships, and I like my relationship with FreshBooks.”
